We all love a great cat meme, and some of the best ones are cats or dogs that we might deem to be “chonky,” or “thicc,” with no offense to the pets, of course. While we may find it absolutely adorable and enjoy coming across those “thicc boys,” while we’re scrolling– roughly sixty percent of domestic cats are overweight, which is a good sign that we as pet parents aren’t doing our part in keeping them safe and healthy. We as pet parents can do better, but I know that sometimes we need to know the best ways to contribute to our feline’s health in a positive way.

Pet obesity causes many of the same issues your doctor might advise you about; such as heart disease, cancer, and painful joints. Those issues are only the tip of the iceberg when talking about illnesses that plague the domestic cat population, and the common denominator in many cases is the fact that our cats are overweight.

While our furry friends might not always be able to communicate to us that they aren’t feeling their best, it’s our job to make sure we’re watching for those signs and talking with our vet if we suspect our kitty companions might be unwell. If your feline’s stomach touches the floor when they’re upright, or their stomach area seems to bow out when looking at them from above, your cat might be overweight.

While we all love the time we spend snuggled up on the couch with our cat in our lap, especially since cats tend to sleep about eighteen hours a day, it’s important to make sure that their bodies are getting the same things we as humans need: a healthy diet and exercise. I know it can be tempting to respond every time our cats tell us that they can see the bottom of the food bowl– treating us like subpar waiters in a five-star restaurant but hold firm, friends. If your cat has trouble with portion control, try keeping them on a schedule and removing the dish itself when feeding time is over.

Your vet can direct you to the best food brands that will help your cat maintain a healthy weight, as well as advise you on the number of calories your little guy should be consuming a day. It’s probably less than you think. A ten-pound cat should only be consuming about two hundred calories a day, and even less than that if we’re trying to help our furry feline shed their extra “fluff.”

As for those six waking hours? Make sure they’re getting some exercise with one of their favorite toys. A great option for this is a teaser wand with a flashy toy at the end of the string or a laser pointer. Both of these options are engaging for you as well as your cat and are intended to get them up and moving. If you are a pet parent with a heavy schedule, keeping things around like scratching posts or small catnip-filled mice will help your cat find things to occupy themselves with on their own time.

We know that our pets are part of the family, and as such, we need to make sure we treat them that way by keeping them healthy, and happy.
